First, always check the salon for general cleanliness. Look out for any grime or dirt. Check the technician’s hands to see that they are clean. It’s also important to inspect your own feet before you go: 

• Check your skin for cuts. Any open wounds can be susceptible to infections. Skip shaving or waxing your legs a few days before the appointment to minimize the chances of damaging the skin. If you spot any cuts or scratches, it’s best to reschedule until they are healed.  
• Look out for fungal infections. Nail fungus is a problem affecting more than 2.5. million Americans. It can be spotted if your toenails appear discolored. You can easily spread your infection to others and a pedicurist may refuse to treat you if they notice it. 
• Make sure tools have been disinfected. Watch how the technicians sterilize their instruments. If you want to be extra sure, you can even gather your own nail tool kit, sterilize it yourself, and bring it with you for them to use.
