Choosing the right footwear while cooped up at home during quarantine is essential for the health of your feet and ankles. While it may be tempting to walk around barefoot, doing so for extended periods can cause your arches to weaken and even collapse. Weak and fallen arches will not only contribute to bunion and hammertoe formation but also can cause pronation problems that lead to knee, hip, and back pain as well.

Backless fluffy slippers or flip-flops may be fine for quick trips to the bathroom at night, but you need something more supportive for everyday use.

The best footwear to use inside during quarantine:

  • Sandals with good arch support—When you want to let your toes breathe, you can still wear sandals. Be sure to choose a sandal with proper arch support and a back strap to keep your foot in place and avoid flip-flops.
  • Sneakers—Wearing good quality sneakers that are properly sized and fitted will support your feet and protect them from the impacts on wood and tile floors. The same type of sneakers that you would normally wear to a Zumba class are ideal. It’s a good idea to keep a pair just for use indoors so you don’t track viruses, pollen, and bacteria into the house.
